Diamond In The Dirt

You have to dig deep. You have to keep searching. Don't settle for what is easy. Don't allow the lazy mind to win. Follow your gut. It sounds contrived but you know when something isn't right. You feel it. Trust it. Keep believing there is more to be found. Don't settle for lukewarm. Give me red hot or ice cold, not that wishy washy middle ground. Push. Irk. Prod. Make waves. Waves allow other people to go surfing. When you keep digging you find gold, but remember all that glitters isn't gold.

Anger Never Works

The moment you get angry is the moment you lose your balance. Anger distorts your perspective. Anger makes up stories in your head. Anger gives your power away. Anger makes you more angry. No battle, argument, discussion ever is resolved through anger. Only when the anger subsides can there be a resolution, although often things that were said in anger still linger like a bad smell. You can't fight fire with fire. You can't protest for peace with anger. What you resist persists. What are we all so angry about anyway?

Hide And Seek

Whatever we identify with, we experience. Identity though is a choice. We choose what we believe in and then we decide what that means to us and how it is going to make us feel. Then we deny all knowledge of this as being our choice just so that we can go through the process of learning once again to remember who we really are. It's the ultimate cosmic game of hide and seek.

The Road To Nowhere

When Talking Heads sang 'we're on a road to nowhere' back in the 1980's, everyone danced along merrily. Since then lead singer David Byrne has galvanised his place in rock history but also proven his metal with regards to enlightening the human condition. Turns out when he sang those words back in the day, he actually meant it. What if he's right and there is no 'destination'? What if those people who say that it's all about the journey are right? What if you reach your destination and it still isn't enough? There is only one way that I know to beat the 'what ifs' and that is to try and remain as present as possible as often as possible....Read More

The Magic Of Qi Gong

I entered the Qi Gong class feeling crabby and uptight after an irrelevant but nevertheless irritating exchange in the office that morning. My head and heart weren't really in it but the ritual and discipline of attending the class pushed me on and I began the class anyway. I was heavily distracted and unable to concentrate and after just five minutes I began wishing the hour long class would end. The class is situated on the second floor of a building that looks out onto other apartment blocks, and on this particular occasion a young couple were cleaning their apartment and I was nosily distracted by them. Every time I tried to focus on the practice, out of the corner...Read More

Finding Your Way Everyday

There are no rules. There's no path. You don't need to find your purpose before you can start to finally live. Don't read too many books, attend too many seminars. Don't believe those people that tell you they are enlightened. Don't believe there is even enlightenment. All of that just adds weight and concepts to strive towards, taking you away from this moment. This moment. This NOW. How is it? Is there tiredness? Anger? Irritation? Joy? Warmth? Cold? Impatience? Just be aware of it, without judgement. Don't push it away, don't try and hold on to it. That, if anything, is your path, your purpose, your enlightenment. This moment, then this moment, now this moment. All the rest of it...Read More

What Can We Do?

Barcelona, London, Paris, Nantes, Manchester. The attacks keep coming. The fear, the anger, the hurt, the pain and the suffering keeps on growing. In the aftermath of these evil attacks, political and religious leaders all over the world will offer their sincere condolences and make bold statements about staying strong and not letting fear win. And for a while this show of positivity and strength will make us feel a little better, but soon enough we come to realise that nothing has changed and nothing likely will. I don't want to go into depth regarding conspiracy theories of how the political and religious organisations and institutions may have a vested interest in maintaining the 'status quo'. What is most valuable...Read More

Where Are We Going?

I noticed myself striding along the pavement today, taking huge, great steps, pacing fervently to get to my destination. My mind was elsewhere, totally caught up in the need to get to where I was as quickly as possible. Once I checked in with myself and slowed myself back down to a normal and enjoyable pace, a sense of calmness came over me. I began to enjoy the walk. I began to notice more of the things around me.  Slowing down doesn't stop you from doing what you were doing, or getting there that much faster either, but it does give you back to yourself so that you can enjoy the whole experience so much more. Where are you going...Read More

Progress Is Progress

We want to be over there, when we are over here. We want more, better, faster, stronger. We want it NOW. We've always heard the advice that slow and steady win the race and we've grown up with the tale of the tortoise and the hare, yet still we pursue progress with an unhealthy impatience and haste. One tiny step is still progress, even if it appears to be a step backwards. Movement is movement whichever direction, or whichever way you look at it. If you see life from the perspective that everything is experience then there can be no such thing as a backwards step.  We move, we learn, we move again. Progress is progress.

Act As If

Act as if. That's what my good friend and mentor used to tell me. It basically is another way of saying fake it until you make it, but it works. For most people they wait until they have perfected their product, completed their novel, gained enough life experience before they put themselves out there. They rarely get there, many wait forever. Starting is the biggest and hardest step of all but once you've started you can build momentum, gain experience, learn lessons, perfect and hone things along the way. If you don't start you are already behind in the game. Act as if you know the eventual desired outcome and draw it to you. Get out there, hustle, listen, learn,...Read More
